Carnelian Bay is one of those little old neighborhoods that you stumble across after years of living right next door. CB still has dirt roads that make seasoned locals wonder how year-round access is possible. Carnelian Bay is a little settlement dating back to the late 1800’s. Today its got a pebbled beach that is one of the best of the dog-friendly spots in the whole area. Also, the water drops off pretty quickly making it one of my favorite swimming sports. There is a great coffee shop called the Old Post Office, and a kayak/paddleboard (SUP)/paddle boat rental right on the beach now, too. This is called Waterman’s Landing and it’s become the heart-center of standup paddleboarding in North Tahoe. You used to be able to grab a watertaxi from here to the Shakespeare Festival in Sand Harbor during peak seasons. Sierra Boat Co. is here and hosted the ever-growing annual Concours d’Elegance Wooden Boat Show which draws nationally. This event has been moved to Homewood on the West Shore. There is a small commercial area with locals’ favorite CB’s Pizza, 7-11 and a post office. Fantastic hiking trails (and a par course at the Carnelian Woods condos) make for great trekking of any length and there are some great ‘Indian rocks’ above the bay that are fairly easy to reach and have massive Tahoe views.
