Location: 7 miles south of Tahoe City, CA

Price Range: low $100k’s – $900k. Lakefronts: $2m – $7m

Usually referred to as ‘The Avenues’, Tahoma is the town farthest south on the West Shore. When I moved here there were still dirt roads here. Tahoma proper is a quiet neighborhood with all of the north-south streets pointing directly to the gorgeous Rubicon Peak (I’ve heard kids call Rubicon the ‘whip cream mountain’ because of its sharp summit). Extending out from Tahoma there are some neighborhoods with big lakeviews (Westlake Village), some with bigger lots (Kailua Park), and like just about every other neighborhood covered on this website, there are lakefront properties as well. Tahoma has a homeowner’s association ($50/year) which has some buoys but they are hard to come by. There is public lake access nearby.

Tahoma is where you’ll find the classic, barn-red PDQ Supermarket (“Pretty Darn Quick”). Football-sized sandwiches with home-baked bread with options like jalapenos, blue cheese, and garlic. Delicious custom mustard options and other ‘amenities’ (!) round out Alex’s favorite backcountry skiing / hiking sandwich….

As far as real estate prices go, Tahoma is tied with King’s Beach for having the Tahoe Basin’s most affordable properties.
